Flat-Wear’s premier t-shirt is a super soft and lightweight tri-blend, perfect for warm weather or for layering in cooler temperatures. It sports an 1880s wood engraving of Major Allison’s retriever, “Sailor.” Because Sailor’s gaze is focused upward, we added two little birds that caught his attention. (On another version of this tee, we added a pheasant instead.)

Choose from three great colors—one light, one medium, and one dark, depending on how bold or subtle you prefer the artwork on your tees. (Or choose them all; we’ll never tell.) This tee was the top-selling item at our launch at the 2018 Flat-Coated Retriever National Specialty.

ABOUT THE ART +

The main artwork on this t-shirt is a wood engraving featured in The Illustrated Book of the Dog by Vero Shaw, “assisted by the leading breeders of the day.” Published in 1881 by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., the book is now in the public domain. The artist was not credited.

The illustration was included in Chapter L (i.e., 50), “The Retriever.” To highlight just how old this book is, it states, “At present there are two distinct breeds of Retrievers in existence—one the flat or wavy coated, the other curly-coated.” The author refers to Labs as simply “the Labrador.”
